Tidying my sock drawer
You know that classic excuse: "Sorry, no can't come out, tidying my sock drawer."
I guess mine would be what I did last night: putting the DVD shelves in order. As we buy discs, we just dump them beside the tiny weeny little hi-fi system that sits at the bottom of the DVD shelves because we are too lazy to shuffle all the discs along to make room for the new ones.
It doesn't help, of course, that we are fast running out of space on the shelves, meaning before long I'll have to add another -- to the top, which means moving everything again.
But it's great when you finish putting them all back in their rightful places. I love alphabetizing things. I'm funny like that. But some aspects of alphabetizing our DVDs drive me mad.
For example: Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 naturally sit side by side, but the third film in the series annoyingly sits under A, for Army of Darkness. Gaaah!
Additionally, some films come in outsized boxes that won't film anywhere but the top shelf -- my huge Eraserhead box, for example. And my limited-edition Region 1 wooden-box version of The Wicker Man (1971, of course). For the former, to maintain alpha order, I used an empty case and put the disc in there; this also eases access. For the latter, the Region 2 version of the same film holds its place in the alphabet.
Here are two pictures (one and two) of our reorganized shelves. I think they look pretty pretty pretty good, no?

Good work, my man. And tonight... you can tidy the cellar!
Amazing. What a super job.
I am spring cleaning mysefl around here...veryslwoly. the computer desk is impossible and our book shelves are full out busted. We really need a whole other set of shelves.
hum...I can't wait to examine your collection!
he, your Moulin Rouge looks like a special edition...what kind of things are on that...I've got just a regular version...one disc!

I need to do that too. You'll have a similar problem with the latest Die Hard too.
Truth be told, though I too enjoy alphabetizing as much as the next white middle-class anal retentive, I think that if I had enough DVDs to require serious organization, I'd arrange them by (a) series, (b) director (or writer or something), and (c) chronological order of release.
I'd alphabetize as much as possible within those constraints, though.
Oh you funny little autistic man...
I never buy dvds so that saves me having to organize..
but change..
argghh..
I love to count and roll change ( cents..pennys, nickles, dimes and quarters)
Call me RainGirl
That does look snazzy.. We have a small collection of DVD's and VHS yet..
Holy crap, that's a lot of movies. I tend to get rid of a bunch which I haven't watched for a while and then slowly replace them. There are only a few movies that I've kept over the years which I could keep watching over and over again:
GOONIES
SPIES LIKE US
THE BEAST (aka THE BEAST OF WAR)
CLUE
DIE HARD
APOCALYPTO
CRIMSON RIVERS
PRINCESS BRIDE
1492 (finally found one!)
BAND OF BROTHERS
THE MESSENGER
oddly enough I DON'T have a copy of Aliens... although I do have a VHS copy but no VCR.
can i just say that it tickles me to no end that you own babe and legally blonde.
hahhahahah!!!
ha my da does that 2 n he has a list in tha cabinet of all tha movies he also keeps his list in the puter so he can update it wenever he buys a new movie.he's anal that way ...
Bravissimo!!
Would you like to come to my house and tidy our cabinets too? I'll let you do it for free ;-)
With an 18 year old daughter you just don't bother as we've either got a poltergeist or she never puts 'em back anyroad!
Martha: Babe is a classic! One of my all-time favourite movies.
Legally Blonde, not so much. It was a Christmas gift if I remember correctly...
those are some nice shelves. my dvd collection isnt nearly as big and in no particular order...
that's an amazing job mate, and what a nice collection might I add... every blue moon, I do the same with my DVDs and Books... it's tiring but it is also fun to rediscover what you have...
I don't alphabetize them though. that's a lot of work. I arrange them by genre..
wifey won't have ours out on display.
if ever we split, the first thing i'll do is put shelves up for dvd's, cassettes, cd's, albums, vinyl...the lot!
all alphebetised too.
at the moment every cd that comes into the house gets ripped straight to the pc, mainly for use on my shows, then the disc goes into a multi case (96 per case) then the oricinal box goes into storage, and the insert filed! wifey thinks i'm mad, but it takes up far less room and it's easier for me should i need it. the only ball ache is like you say, having to move everything. takes forever. i keep saying i'll buy some more multicases and leaving a load of space at the back of every one, but never do! cool pics.
p.s. i also have evrything on a database. mainly so that if i lend something out, i know when and who has it. and now that i write that i realise exacly how sad i am. i'll get my coat.
yeah...i enjoy sititing back and looking at my organized shelves. I have my comic shelf below the DVD shelf for just the occassion.
