I bet that you look good when you’re cleaning windas

I know it's a few days late and all, but what about them Arctic Monkeys winning the Mercury Music Prize, eh? That'll be the last we hear of them, then.

Wife and I turned on the award show just in time to see the Arctics doing a live number for a crowd gathered outdoors somewhere, if memory serves.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a bit of their music. I even put that video of theirs up on here a wee while back, but I've gotta say that the song they did on telly the other night...

Well, all I could think was that the singer sounded just like George Formby. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I spent many happy hours sat in front of George Formby films as a kid. But I'm not sure it's the sound that Arctic Monkeys are going for, is it?

That Arctic Monkeys singer; and ukulele man George Formby

I don't care for the Arctic Monkeys.

The best thing about them was that cover of "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" by the Sugarbabes.

My dear partner asked to listen to them the other night, as she'd never heard them before and wondered what all the fuss was...

About 4 tracks in she said "I think that's quite enough of that, eh?"

I had to agree...

I'm not a fan, they seem like one of those here today, gone tomorrow bands. People are raving about them now, but I suspect that they will be forgotten in 12 months time.

Liked the George Formby comparison LOL

They would be gutted no doubt to hear the comparison.

HAHAHA!

Btw, what prompted you to read the other blog?

Red: Yeah, it was all right that Sugarbabes track...

Cliff: That's funny!

Kate: I fear I might have upset some of my northern readers with the comparison. Y'know, me being a southerner and unable to discern one accent from another... But to be fair, it was more about the way he was singing. Bizarre.

RD: They might be! I check it out from time to time, y'know...

Candy: Thanks, girl. I hope I haven't killed their transatlantic career...

just a word in thier defense.
i like em. not crazy mad, but do like em.
i live 6-8 miles from where they live(d)
they went to college where i went (left early).
they sing in thier own voices, not trying to affect an american accent, so that could be the appeal for me, in the same way billy bragg appeals to southerners and mark e smith appeals to mancunians.
they have "been around" with a huge following for 18 months now.
i am awaiting the next album before i really judge them.
and to anyone who heard alex say "call 999 richard hawley has been robbed" when recieving the award, check out his "coles corner album". in fact check out his previous two as well. you may be pleasently suprised!
be aware i am not saying any of you are wrong to have those views, cos i am the worst when it comes to opinions on music, but....
thats all, back to you pal.

Some day soon there will be automatic-Arctic-Monkeys lyric machines available on this here interwobble...

Not that they can't be done, albeit shabbily, in a second.

I'm standin' at the bar,
That bird looks well nice,
Wearin' 'er TX Maxx
And drinking Smirnoff Ice...

And so on, so on...

A bit of an insult to Formby, in fact. Especially since he wrote all Bob Dylan's best songs, an' all...
